WHAT ARE SCALES?
Scales are very simply a set of notes that sound good together. The group is ascending and descending, and are used to create the melody of songs, as well as chords. The amount of notes in a scale can differ. For example, a pentatonic scale is made of five notes, while an octatonic scale has eight different notes. There are also no rules as to how far apart each of the notes are, as that can change also change, depending on the scale.
I'm not going to lie; scales aren't the most enjoyable things to play. However, it's important you learn them.
1)Their great for your fingers. Playing them over will greatly improve your technique, and ability to switch from note to note
2)They may eventually give you a better understanding as to why different songs have different notes. You may also understand why different notes played together in harmony sound good.
3)Scales are the most basic building blocks of music!
Some important scales to begin with are major scales. It is made up of 7 different notes, with the first note repeated at the top of the scale.

All major scales also have the same pattern as to how far apart each of the notes are. This pattern is; Tone, Tone, Semitone, Tone, Tone, Tone, Semitone. Tone's and Semitones are explained in the theory section of this website. All of the major scales can be found here. Learning to play C major, G major, F major, B flat major, and E flat major is recommend, as many beginner flute songs are played in these keys. This means that they use all the notes shown in those scales. Although other scales are good to learn, they are not essential, and use notes which are rarely used with beginner flutists.
