How Flute's Are Made
Making a flute is a very complicated process. It's complexity requires flute makers to complete a five year apprenticeship. For flutes to create the proper sound, they must be precise, especially the headjoint. Flutes create the best sound when made of pure silver. However, most flutes are created from yellow brass, which is made up of 70% copper and 30% zinc.
How to Make a Concert Flute
STEP !- Three peices are cute from a metal tube. These three peices will later become the headjoint, body, and footjoint.
STEP 2- Holes for the keys are cut where needed, and the extra metal is pulled out to form a chimney shape.
STEP 3- A small strap of metal is added onto the body and footjoint. Metal pillars are welded onto these.
STEP 4- Keys for each hole are cut out into the correct shape. When prepared, they can be soldered to their spot.
STEP 5- A peice of metal, known as a riser, is connected to the jeadjoint, and the lip plate is added on top of this. An embrochure hole is then cut through all three peices of metal.

STEP 6- The flute can than be polished and plated with silver. To do this, they are placed in special baths on racks.
STEP 7- Pads, felts, and corks are all added to prevent the keys from rubbing together.
STEP 8-The tuning cork and crown is added.
STEP 9- The flute is tuned and tested to assure it has the correct pitch, before being given to retailers and sold.
