Flutes have come a long way in the past years. Infact, the first flutes which have been found are made of bones, with holes similar to those of a recorder.
The flute shown to the left is believed to be the oldest not only flute, but musical instrument ever retrieved. It came from a cave in Germany. The flute was found broken into at least twelve different pieces, but was put back together by a team of archeologists. This flute is only about eight and a half inches long, compared to our flute today, which measures approximitely 26 inches in length. It was carved from the bone of a vulture, with a small v-shape at the end, where the player would blow. This flute only contained five holes for the player to cover, in order to produce different notes.
